info
This huernia thrives on neglect, making it one of the easiest garden plants for California. They are drought-tolerant, but this one will need a deep watering every couple weeks in dry months. These succulents will be plump with vibrant green stems during their growth season. It’s natural for these same plants to show stress during their dry season, often turning shades of red, orange or brown, giving added seasonal interest to the succulent garden. If you prefer a lush look, watering once dry will keep them plump.

Protect from long periods of cold winter rain.

Growing Notes

While huernias are typically thought of as frost tender, this particular one has proven to survive frosts in protected areas, showing that it is more hardy than typical stapeliads.
Growing this plant in extra gritty soil (mixing cactus mix with equal parts pumice) will make this plant more resilient to winter rainstorms.
Blooms from late summer through fall.
