Growing Notes

Loves to be along the coast in California, where marine influence is consistent and frost is uncommon.
Stunning, lush, foliage feature for many years. This slow growing palm is the perfect size for small gardens.
Will not tolerate hot dry heat, especially if combined with hot winds.
Adaptable to various soils, but prefers well drained soil.

Special Interest

The young fruits called hāwane were peeled and then eaten by traditional Hawaiians. To gather fruit the Hawaiians notched the trunks of the palms making ladders. On older palms these notches remain as lingering evidence of an earlier way of life.
